Kingston-based mobile tyre unit DJ Styles rolls repairs and balancing across several parishes

A compact, fully stocked van doubles as a rolling workshop for DJ Styles, a mobile tyre business that fits and balances wheels where drivers are stuck rather than sending them to a fixed yard.

The operator, who is based in Kingston, said the farthest parish served so far has been Hanover, with jobs also completed in St Elizabeth, Manchester, Clarendon, St Ann, St Thomas and Portland. Although the unit has not yet carried out work in Montego Bay, enquiries from St James are frequent; the owner told the interviewer that talks are under way about establishing a presence on that side of the island.

Customer traffic is climbing, the operator reported, with fresh callers every day and repeated thanks for a service that gives motorists someone to phone when a tyre fails. Women account for a large share of bookings, though men use the line as well; convenience is the main draw, the operator noted, echoing an interviewer’s remark that clients “pay for convenience.”

When a motorist is immobilised—on a toll road, for example—the procedure is to collect enough details by phone to choose the correct replacement, then arrive with new rubber and hardware to fit on the spot. A spare tyre is routinely carried, the operator explained, so a wasted trip is avoided if the damage cannot be seen clearly from a distance. That habit, the operator said, comes down to preparation, citing a mother’s advice: “proper preparation prevents poor performance.”

Physical lifting remains the toughest part of the job, but the operator argues that mindset matters: tell yourself a wheel is impossibly heavy and it will feel that way; learn technique and the load becomes manageable. Alongside mounting, the crew performs wheel balancing to stop steering shake at speed—a step the operator stressed should accompany every new tyre fit, in line with common workshop practice on alignments and balances.

Family example fuels the trade. The operator named an uncle, Mr Barnes, founder of Barnes Tyre Repair and Balancing, as a key mentor who opened the door to tyre work. Watching him help neighbours over the years showed how the craft can ease community stress, the operator added, and delivering the same relief now feels rewarding.
