Investigators in St James are examining how Latoya Bulgin was shot and killed during a police confrontation in Granville.

TVJ News had not received an official update from the police at the time of reporting. Residents said Bulgin was among a group in the community who were planning a protest over a 17-year-old killed in another police confrontation days earlier when the latest incident occurred.

Tension in the area follows a fatal shooting on Mother's Day. Marlene Malahoo Forte, member of parliament for St James West Central, said a peaceful protest had been organised and that Bulgin was on the scene when she was shot.

Malahoo Forte said that, based on what she has observed, "the police commissioner may have to intervene immediately." She said that from all indications the situation does not look good, that she did not like what she was hearing, and that she was troubled by what residents were saying about policing.

A cousin of Bulgin who spoke to TVJ News called the killing a foolish act and questioned what she could have done there.

The death is the second fatal police confrontation in St James within days.
