Zverev halts Fery's Wimbledon semifinal charge as British wildcard exits with record gains

1 min read

British wildcard Arthur Fery's standout campaign at Wimbledon closed in the semifinals when second seed Alexander Zverev blocked his path to the final with a 7-6 (7-0), 6-2, 6-4 victory.

The 23-year-old began the Championships ranked 114th globally and had never gone past the second round at any Grand Slam. Still, he pushed through to the last four before meeting the more seasoned Zverev.

Even in defeat, Fery received a standing ovation from the Centre Court crowd after a fortnight in which he carried Britain's singles hopes further than most had anticipated.

Updated rankings due Monday will move Fery up to 36th in the world and make him Britain's highest-ranked player. He also walks away with £900,000 in prize money.
