Grace Shield claim weekend double against Headley Cup at Sabina Park

1 min readKingston

Jamaica’s All Grace Shield squad took both limited-overs contests against the All Headley Cup side at Sabina Park over the weekend, flipping the outcome from last season when the rural contingent swept the series.

Friday’s Twenty20 opened the rivalry. All Headley Cup finished on 129 for nine after tight bowling kept the score in check. All Grace Shield then got home at 130 for eight, winning by two wickets in a tight chase. Andrew Lloyd top-scored with 52 and received Player of the Match honours.

The longer game told a similar story. All Grace Shield posted 270 for seven when they batted first, with Luwayne Pryce making 57 and West Indies Under-19 player Vytel Lawes adding 42. All Headley Cup replied with 223 for nine and lost by 47 runs. Demario Hall struck an attacking 49 that featured seven fours or sixes, yet could not close the gap. Lawes earned Player of the Match for his work with bat and ball in that fixture.

Officials staged the games as part of Jamaica’s build-up to the Cricket West Indies Regional Under-19 Championships. The weekend also put Sabina Park’s newly fitted floodlights through a successful on-field trial. Those lights will be in use when the Jamaica Kingsmen franchise again play home Caribbean Premier League (CPL) matches at the ground.
