Everyday purchases send two NCB customers to FIFA World Cup

2 min readKingston

What began as everyday spending has turned into the opportunity of a lifetime for two National Commercial Bank Jamaica Limited (NCBJ) customers, who are now preparing to experience the FIFA World Cup in person through the NCB Big Baller promotion, powered by Visa.

For Olivette Lue-Nicholson, it was shopping for her granddaughter’s first birthday party that helped her cop the Grand Prize of an all-expense paid trip for two to the finals of the FIFA World Cup in the USA. Similarly, Robin McFayden jokingly credits his wife’s shopping habits for his second place win in the promotion.

Their wins were announced during a small celebration hosted by NCBJ at Jamaica Food and Drink Kitchen in Kingston on Tuesday, June 23.

“I wasn’t making an effort to enter,” shared 58-year-old Olivette Lue-Nicholson, who hails from Portland. “I was just purchasing a lot of things for my granddaughter’s butterfly-themed first birthday.” Lue Nicholson will be accompanied by her son, Frentz. The trip holds special meaning for the pair, as Frentz was named in honour of the French team’s 1998 World Cup victory. Both are now hoping that France will make another memorable run in this year’s tournament.

Second-place winner, Robin McFayden, sees his win as ‘cashback’ on his wife’s many purchases using his credit card.

“My wife likes to buy things,” he laughed. “That’s why she’s coming with me on this trip, as its as much her prize as it is mine! She’s already planning to buy us coordinating outfits for the trip.”

A lifelong Brazil supporter, McFayden noted that the trip is almost a childhood dream as his love of football traces back to when he and his friends imagined themselves as football legend, Pelé, while playing neighbourhood matches. The 62-year-old businessman also noted how glad he is that his credit card could have given him access to such an awesome experience.

“I never carry cash on me, I always walk with my card,” said McFayden. “I love to earn the rewards and use them for all kinds of things, so I’m definitely not going to stop now.”

The first phase of NCB’s Big Baller promotion ran from March 19 to April 30, 2026. Customers earned entries by spending J$25,000 or more in a single transaction using eligible NCB Visa credit cards. The prize packages include airfare, hotel accommodation, match tickets, ground transportation and exclusive Visa hospitality experiences for two.

The promotion continues until July 8, 2026, with NCB’s Big Baller Phase 2, giving eligible NCB Visa credit cardholders the chance to win one of three FIFA Finals watch-party kits valued at over J$300,000 each.
