KINGSTON, Jamaica — Jamaica’s legal fraternity is mourning the passing of retired Court of Appeal President Justice Ian Xavier Forte, who died on Friday at the age of 89.

Justice Forte, one of the country’s most respected jurists, reportedly passed away at his home. Details surrounding his death have not been disclosed.

Throughout a distinguished legal career spanning several decades, Justice Forte served in a number of high-profile roles, including Director of Public Prosecutions from 1977 to 1988. He was appointed to the Court of Appeal in 1988 and later rose to become President of the Court of Appeal, serving until his retirement in 2005.

His contributions to the Jamaican justice system earned him widespread respect both locally and across the Caribbean. Following his retirement, he continued to serve on appellate courts in the Cayman Islands and the Turks and Caicos Islands, further solidifying his reputation as a leading legal mind in the region.

Justice Forte was awarded the Order of Jamaica in recognition of his outstanding service to the nation and the legal profession.
