IN a stunning upset at Caymanas Park on Saturday, Stardom powered home at odds of 13-1 to win the $3-million Kingston Stakes, beating stablemates Salute The Don and God’s Plan to complete a one-two-three sweep for trainer Gary Subratie in the final major prep before the Classic races.
Allowed to settle off the pace Stardom, ridden by Dane Dawkins, found a devastating kick in the straight, wearing down Salute The Don (Ian Spence) in the shadow of the wire. God’s Plan (Emelio McLean), who was second from the start, finished best of the rest to make it a clean Subratie trifecta. Stardom won by a half-length in the Graded Stakes contest for native-bred colts and geldings over seven and a half furlongs (1,500m). The winning time was 1:33.2 (23.4 x 46.4 x 1:12.3 x 1:26.3).
It was a bitterly disappointing afternoon for the favourite and last season’s champion, two-year-old
We Jammin, who finished in sixth place under Omar Walker.
Trainers Jason DaCosta and Gregg Fennell and jockeys Robert Halleden, Tevin Foster, and Anthony Thomas won two races on the day.
DaCosta and Halledeen teamed up with Imjustagirl and Pepper Stepper to win the second and fourth races, respectively.
Fennell saddled Nebraska (Foster) in the third race and Ruby’s Light (Thomas) in the eighth race.
Foster’s other winner was Sparkling Fire for trainer Omar Williams in the seventh race, while Thomas won aboard Chinita Estrella in the sixth race for trainer Steven Todd for his double.
Racing continues today with the running of The Portmore.
