Westmoreland Lawyers Warn Courthouse Damage Is Slowing Court Cases

Westmoreland

Attorneys in Westmoreland are urging the Government to repair the parish courthouse, saying its condition is disrupting matters, causing delays and increasing costs. The building remains in poor shape following Hurricane Melissa.

In a statement, the lawyers said the problem has become an issue for access to justice and public trust in the court system. Lambert Johnson of the Westmoreland Bar Association said the courthouse is no longer fit for occupation. With parish court business now being handled from the Whithorn courthouse, he said the arrangement has led to crowding, overtime and a growing backlog. Johnson also said Circuit Court matters are being heard in Hanover, creating hardship for lawyers and jurors who must travel outside Westmoreland.
