Husband dies after alleged chopping of wife; body found at Robin's Bay; Troy residents protest arrest

A 67-year-old man accused of fatally chopping his wife before swallowing a poisonous substance has himself died. Police identified the deceased as Jocelyn Wellington. His wife, 62-year-old Marcia Wellington, died on Wednesday. He died on Thursday, hours after she succumbed to her injuries.

Reports say the couple quarrelled on Wednesday over divorce-related matters. During the dispute, Marcia Wellington was allegedly chopped several times and suffered fatal wounds. Jocelyn Wellington is believed to have taken a poisonous substance soon afterwards. Officers found her on a staircase with multiple chop wounds and bleeding heavily. Both were taken to hospital, where she was pronounced dead. He was admitted under police guard and later died while receiving treatment.

Separately, the body of a 27-year-old man missing since July 21 was discovered Thursday morning along the shoreline at Robin's Bay Beach near Green Castle in St. Mary. About 7:00 a.m., a fisherman walking the beach found a man lying unresponsive. Police removed the body pending a post-mortem. Residents said the man once lived in the community but had moved to Kingston, and that he had been diagnosed with schizophrenia. St. Mary police asked anyone who can help confirm his identity to contact them.

In the United States, Jamaican flight attendant Lorenza Thompson, employed by Southwest Airlines, was reportedly detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents on July 14 while working in Nashville, Tennessee. Citing Fox News, reports said he overstayed a visa after entering the United States on April 17, 2021, on a visa that expired on October 16, 2021. A GoFundMe page seeking help with his legal fees said he was working toward citizenship, had no criminal record, held a valid work visa, and had a pending asylum case, but was detained after returning to base from a work trip.

In Trelawny, residents of Troy took to the streets on Thursday still grieving the Tuesday killing of 10-year-old Shanique Coke. They blocked the Troy main road, which links South Trelawny to northern Manchester, after police reportedly arrested a man linked to the mob killing of Delroy Coke, believed to have attacked the child, and a brutal beating of his father. Placards called for justice and protection of children. One protester said: "We protest because the police lock up a man and we want him to be freed. We want justice."

Police said after the child's body was found with her throat slashed in bushes, a mob attacked a father and son in the community whom residents described as relatives and accused the son of rape and murder. The son was beaten and stoned to death; the father was seriously wounded. Assistant Commissioner Glenford Miller, head of Area One, said investigators were seeking those involved in the mob killing and could not yet confirm whether anyone had been arrested.

A resident who asked not to be named said: "The whole of Troy in mourning. We can't stop thinking about the little girl and how she died so awful." According to police and residents, Shanique was walking home from a shop mid-morning Tuesday when she was abducted. A farmer searching for his cow after hearing sounds in the bushes later found her body and raised the alarm. Her aunt, Shauna Williams Stevens, recalled the child's brilliance and said the family was devastated.

In Kingston, Fabian Lewis, appearing in the Kingston and St. Andrew Parish Court on Tuesday on shopbreaking and simple larceny charges, interrupted proceedings with an outburst. Presiding judge Peter Wilson indicated a psychiatric evaluation may be needed. Lewis said he had been on his own all his life and that the government had never helped him, and that it would be better if they killed him than put him through the process. Wilson stopped him, noting the State was paying for his legal representation, and stressed that a psychiatric assessment was required. Lewis is due back on October 5.
