Jamaica to See More Afternoon Showers, Thunderstorms as Caribbean Trough Holds

A trough stretched across the central Caribbean is expected to keep unsettled weather over Jamaica and the wider Greater Antilles for the next few days, with afternoon showers and thunderstorms remaining in the forecast. Satellite imagery also showed convective activity affecting Cuba, Hispaniola, Puerto Rico and Jamaica, while conditions over the open Caribbean Sea were generally fair.

Forecasters said there were still some light upper-level clouds across the region, but no major shower or thunderstorm build-up was evident over the open waters. The same general pattern is expected to hold over the coming days, with daytime heating helping to trigger more cloudiness and storm activity across the islands.

For tonight, skies across Jamaica are forecast to be mostly fair, with temperatures falling to around 26°C. Winds are expected to be about 5 knots along both coasts. By morning, showers are likely to affect parts of the eastern parishes, while the rest of the island should remain mostly fair. In the afternoon, showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop across central and western sections, with temperatures reaching 35°C in Kingston and 34°C in Montego Bay.

A few showers and thunderstorms are also forecast for Spanish Town and Mandeville, along with Santa Cruz, Black River, Savanna-la-Mar, Negril, Lucea and Montego Bay. Across northern areas, cloudy spells, showers and a few thunderstorms are expected in Golden Spring, Bog Walk, Christiana, Greenvale and Duncans in Trelawny. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are forecast on Saturday, with more showers likely across western parishes on Sunday. By Monday, the main weather activity is expected over inland districts and eastern parishes.

At sea, the north coast is forecast to see easterly winds near 15 knots and waves around 1.5 metres. Along the south coast, winds should range from 15 to 20 knots from the east, with wave heights between 1.5 and 2 metres. A small craft warning remains in force for offshore waters, where easterly winds could reach 25 knots and wave heights could build to 2.5 metres. The outlook for Saturday calls for easterly winds of 15 to 20 knots, increasing to 20 to 25 knots on Sunday and Monday, with waves between 2 and 2.5 metres.
