Cavalier and Racing United face high-stakes JPL play-off test at Stadium East
Defending champions Cavalier SC and Racing United enter a major Jamaica Premier League contest at Stadium East today, with kick-off set for 4:00 pm and both clubs needing a result to steady their play-off push.
Racing, once sitting in what appeared to be a secure third position, have fallen to fifth on 56 points. That leaves them only four points ahead of Cavalier, whose season has been marked by uneven form. Both sides remain at risk of dropping out of the top six, with Arnett Gardens and Dunbeholden FC among the clubs hoping to force their way in.
At the top of the standings, Montego Bay United need just one point to confirm a top-two finish and earn direct passage to the semi-finals. They travel to face Harbour View, who have slipped back into the relegation places. Montego Bay United, Mount Pleasant FA, Portmore United and Waterhouse FC have already booked places in the play-offs.
The relegation race could also move sharply today. Spanish Town Police can be formally sent down if they lose to Phoenix Chapelton Maroons.
Cavalier and Racing have each beaten the other once this season. After this match day is completed on Monday, only two rounds will remain, leaving little room for either club to stumble.
For Racing, victory would seal their first-ever play-off berth, but their recent form has made the task more difficult. They have gone eight matches without a win and have lost their last two outings. They must also cope without Nickyle Ellis, one of their limited attacking outlets, after he was dismissed in stoppage time during Wednesday’s 2-1 defeat to Molynes United.
Cavalier have collected seven points from their previous five games. A win would strengthen their hold on a play-off place, while a draw would at least keep them in sixth.
Arnett Gardens, winners of three of their last five matches, can reduce the distance to Cavalier when they visit Portmore United at Ferdie Neita Park. Portmore have already defeated Arnett twice this season, are coming off consecutive victories, and have little pressure on them in this fixture.
Dunbeholden, ninth on 48 points, are also positioned to challenge if the door opens. They are already safe for next season and will meet Treasure Beach at STETHS Sports Complex. Treasure Beach, lifted by Thursday’s win over Waterhouse, must take all three points to keep their survival hopes alive.
Treasure Beach have earned four points from their last two matches and sit one point clear of the drop zone. However, both previous meetings with Dunbeholden this season ended in defeats, with Treasure Beach conceding four times in each game.
