CVM’s May 19 newscast focused on escalating tensions between the United States and Cuba, controversy over Jamaica’s hurricane relief spending, and legal questions following a firearm sentencing case.

Reports that Cuba may have obtained more than 300 military drones from Russia and Iran have drawn concern in Washington, including fears they could threaten US targets such as Guantanamo Bay. Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel warned that any US military move against the island could bring grave consequences. Defence analyst Dr. Sanjay Badra Maharaj said Cuba’s armed forces remain weakened by old equipment and economic strain, but warned that a collapse could create refugee flows and allow military-grade weapons to spread through the Caribbean.

In Jamaica, the Opposition People’s National Party criticised the handling of J$1.44 billion in donations for Hurricane Melissa relief. Dr. Angela Brown Burke said the process lacked order and transparency, citing estimates that 156,000 homes were damaged and 90,000 families affected. The Government, through Senator Marlon Morgan, said the audit figures needed context, arguing that spending had to follow public finance rules. He said J$240 million was being used for roof repairs, J$600 million for model housing bases, and J$560 million for other recovery work.

Attorney-at-law Alexander Shaw also questioned Jamaica’s firearms law after a Kingston music producer received heavy sentences linked to possession of eight imitation firearms. Shaw said the law treats imitation and real guns the same for sentencing, limiting judges’ ability to weigh case-specific facts.

Other items included taxi operators giving the Government until June 1 to address a promised 16 per cent fare increase, testimony in the Clansman matter concerning the killing of Zamari McKay, a 48-hour curfew in sections of St. Andrew South, plans for a new nonprofit organisation law in October 2026, and a Kingston cleanup drive along Heywood Street.
