CVM Sunrise Highlights National News, Sports Wins And Caribbean Reading Month
CVM Sunrise’s June 5 programme moved across national news, sports, culture and entertainment, with segments on hurricane shelter funding, emergency-call abuse, scholarships in St. Thomas, Jamaican performances overseas, women’s pool success and Caribbean literature.
In the morning headlines, Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie announced an extra $60 million for municipal corporations to improve emergency shelter conditions ahead of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season. The funds are to cover items such as blankets, cots and bedding. He also outlined plans for purpose-built shelters in Clarendon, St. Elizabeth and Westmoreland, with each facility expected to hold up to 700 people and withstand hurricanes and earthquakes.
The programme also reported that the Jamaica Constabulary Force is warning against prank and nuisance calls to 119. Assistant Commissioner Gary Francis said the Emergency Communication Centre receives about 5,000 calls daily, with roughly 65 per cent classified as prank or nuisance calls and about 20 per cent requiring urgent police action.
A scholarship initiative in St. Thomas was highlighted, offering up to $300,000 for eligible tertiary students from Llandewey and nearby communities. The Open Door University Scholarship was launched by Associate Pastor Kenroy Moiston and Melanie Moyes through their foundation, in partnership with the Llandewey Church of God in Christ.
Sports coverage included ESPN ranking Usain Bolt ninth among the greatest athletes of the 21st century, Megan Simmons winning the 100m hurdles at the Rome Diamond League in a season’s best 12.50 seconds, and Jamaica’s women pool players dominating the Queen of the Green tournament in Barbados.
The show also featured Shenique Shan Sinclair discussing Read Caribbean Month and recommending Caribbean books, young entrepreneur Christa Robinson showcasing her crochet brand Crafts by Christa, and entertainer Niga Boy speaking about new music and his headline appearance at Club Mecca in Kingston.
