CVM Sunrise covers inflation risks, NARA leadership and youth development
CVM’s Sunrise programme on May 28, 2026 brought together several national issues, including Jamaica’s inflation outlook, hurricane recovery planning, sport, youth entrepreneurship, eye health and student development.
The Bank of Jamaica warned that inflation could move above its 4 to 6 per cent target band in the coming months, with international oil prices and conflict in the Middle East identified as major pressures. BOJ Governor Richard Byles said the length and seriousness of the conflict would help determine the scale of any increase. The central bank also pointed to possible El Niño-related effects on farming and food prices, while the Monetary Policy Committee kept the policy rate at 5.5 per cent.
In the morning news, retired Major General Anthony Anderson was announced as chief executive officer of the National Reconstruction and Resilience Authority. Prime Minister Dr Andrew Holness said Anderson would assume duties on June 1, 2026, after an international recruitment process that drew 120 applications, including 85 for the CEO post.
The programme also carried the Popeye’s Challenge Cup quarter-final draw. Portmore United, Arnett Gardens, Molynes United, Mount Pleasant Football Academy, Montego Bay United, Jamaica Defence Force FC, Tru Juice FC and Chapelton Maroons were confirmed among the last eight.
Health discussion focused on vision care, with Dr Mayana Francis, an optometrist at Kingston Public Hospital and low-vision specialist with the Jamaica Society for the Blind, urging regular eye checks. She said diabetes is a leading cause of blindness among working-age people and encouraged annual screening for people living with the condition.
Other segments highlighted children and young people. Financial educator Carlton G. encouraged parents to observe children’s business instincts, problem-solving and money curiosity from early. The Pocket Rocket Foundation also promoted its Ready, Set, Accelerate summit for 150 student athletes from 38 high schools, with mentorship, networking and practical development sessions planned.
