Guardsman worker Damion Walters dies after May fire at Kingston Beryllium garage

Damion Walters, 43, who worked with the Guardsman Group, has died from burns suffered in an accidental fire on May 27 during mechanical work at the firm’s garage compound.

The fire broke out at Beryllium Limited on South Camp Road in Kingston and moved rapidly through the site. Emergency crews responded and eventually contained the blaze.

Walters was among four people who were critically hurt. One of those injured died soon after the incident. Walters died on Monday while receiving care at the Burn Center in Augusta, Georgia, in the United States.

He was flown to the United States the day after the fire under an arrangement that brought together partners in Jamaica and abroad. Even with specialised treatment at the well-known burn facility and the presence of people close to him, he did not survive his injuries.

Relatives, friends and co-workers are grieving a man those near him called deeply valued and loved. The Guardsman Group said it is still standing with his family through the loss.

Executive Chairman Kenneth Benjamin said the organisation is devastated by Walters’ death. "This is a heartbreaking day for Damion's family and for all of us who knew him. From the moment the incident occurred, our focus was on giving him every possible chance of recovery. Today, our hearts are with his loved ones, and we pray they find strength and comfort in the days ahead," Benjamin said.

Deputy Executive Chairman Nicholas Benjamin also offered condolences, saying, "We held onto hope throughout his treatment, and we are deeply saddened by this outcome."

He told the newspaper that the remaining injured workers are doing well and are expected to return to Jamaica within the coming weeks.

Guardsman also thanked first responders, the Burn Foundation of Jamaica, medical staff, aviation partners and everyone who helped with the overseas transfer and continued care.
