1804 Robertson Map Labels Jamaican Site a Pond as Satellite Views Suggest Built Feature

While scanning Google Earth for new places to survey, an explorer came upon a formation that looked unusually straight and out of place with the surrounding terrain. At first it seemed insignificant, but review of Google Historical Imagery and older satellite views indicated the outline was man-made rather than natural.

Consulting James Robertson’s 1804 map of Jamaica showed the same area recorded as a “pond,” a label that sharpened rather than settled the puzzle. The mismatch invited questions about whether the ground might relate to an old water system, a forgotten built structure, or heritage that later records no longer describe.
