Julian Chang joins JLP: Former People’s National Party (PNP) councillor for the Savanna-la-Mar Division in Westmoreland, Julian Chang, has officially joined the ruling Jamaica Labour Party (JLP).
According to Nationwide News, Chang’s membership was approved on Tuesday during a meeting of the JLP’s Standing Committee at the party’s Belmont Road headquarters in St Andrew.
The approval clears the way for Chang to cross the floor of the Westmoreland Municipal Corporation, where she will now sit with the JLP’s minority caucus.
Her switch does not alter the political balance in the corporation, as the PNP continues to hold a commanding 10-4 majority.
Chang resigned from the PNP late last month. At the time, the party issued a statement thanking her for her service and noting that it had made significant efforts to resolve concerns between her and members of the constituency leadership.
Although the PNP did not identify the source of the dispute, it followed a public fallout between Chang and Central Westmoreland MP Dwayne Vaz.
Chang has accused Vaz of sexually harassing her and of conspiring to remove her as chairman of the Savanna-la-Mar Division. Vaz has strongly denied both allegations.
