Desmond McKenzie Alleges Police Pepper Spray During West Kingston Shooting Aftermath

1 min readKingston

West Kingston Member of Parliament Desmond McKenzie has reported that a police officer pepper-sprayed him on Tuesday morning as he sought to settle residents following a police shooting in his constituency.

According to Mr McKenzie, he stepped in when an officer moved to take a woman into custody and she positioned herself behind him for protection. During that exchange, he said, he was hit with pepper spray.

Medics attended to him where the incident occurred. He later refused further treatment, condemned the deployment of pepper spray, and voiced unease about what happened.

The Independent Commission of Investigations has begun looking into the police shooting. It is not yet known how the person who was shot is doing.
