Dancehall artiste Ding Dong says football was his first serious passion before music and dancing became the path that made him one of Jamaica’s most recognisable entertainers.

In a television interview, Ding Dong said many people may not know that he spent years playing football before turning fully to entertainment. He recalled playing at the primary-school level, then schoolboy football at Donald Quarrie, before later being involved with Mountain View Santos.

He said the shift away from football came as he weighed the realities of earning from the sport in Jamaica. According to him, unless a player reached the national team, it was difficult to make meaningful money from football at the time. He also said an injury affected his running and made him more careful about protecting his feet.

Although football and dancehall both demand stamina, Ding Dong said performing on stage takes more from him physically. He explained that his shows require him to sing with sustained energy while keeping up with dancers whose pace remains high throughout the performance.

He also credited his football background with helping his work on stage, saying the endurance built from the sport carried over into his performances.

Ding Dong, who appeared in an Argentina-coloured jersey, spoke about his love for the Argentine national side. Asked about clubs he supports, he pointed locally to Santos and Mountain View, and internationally to Inter Miami and Argentina. He also gave respect to a tough coach from his youth, saying the coach taught him a great deal.

The segment ended with Ding Dong giving a performance of “One Up”, continuing the energetic style that has helped define his presence in Jamaican entertainment.
