CVM’s Fan Central used a special Extra Time broadcast to preview the expanded FIFA World Cup, with hosts Jordan Forte and Kimani O’Sullivan joined by Aidan Alexander, former Reggae Boy Tyrone Marshall and former FIFA referee Victor Stewart.

The panel reviewed the 12 groups in the 48-team tournament, starting with Mexico, South Africa, Korea Republic and Czechia in Group A. Alexander said Group A looked balanced and pointed to Mexico’s home-region support, Czechia’s Patrik Schick and South Korea as possible factors.

Group B, featuring Canada, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Qatar and Switzerland, was framed as less star-heavy but still competitive. Canada were discussed as a team expected to advance, with Jesse Marsch leading a squad that includes Alphonso Davies and Cyle Larin.

Brazil, Morocco, Haiti and Scotland drew attention in Group C. Alexander backed Brazil and Morocco to progress, while O’Sullivan suggested Morocco could even top the group. Marshall also identified Morocco as a strong African contender, citing their recent consistency and last World Cup semi-final run.

Other discussion covered the United States in Group D, Germany’s Group E with Curaçao, Côte d’Ivoire and Ecuador, and Group F with the Netherlands, Japan, Sweden and Tunisia. Alexander named Ecuador as a dark horse and said Germany had not fully convinced him. Later groups brought focus to Belgium, Spain, France, Argentina, Portugal, Colombia, England, Croatia and Ghana.

The programme also examined IFAB rule changes due for the tournament, including five-second counts for throw-ins and goal kicks, stricter treatment of players covering their mouths during confrontations, and sanctions linked to teams walking off in protest. Stewart said referees would physically count down restarts and award possession, or a corner in the case of a delayed goal kick, if the ball is not put back in play.

The panel also discussed Somali referee Omar Artan, who was denied entry to the United States days before the tournament despite being selected among the officials. Stewart called the development heartbreaking for a referee whose career goal would be officiating at a World Cup, while also noting that Jamaica’s Oshane Nation would represent the island among the match officials.
