Fi We Children demands full probe into Munro College student’s drowning at Shallay Beach
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Fi We Children Foundation (FWCF) is demanding a “full investigation” into the drowning of Munro College student Kamal Reynolds, 16, in St Thomas.
Reynolds, a St Elizabeth native, went missing on Wednesday after he got into trouble while swimming with classmates at Shallay Beach in St Thomas. Reports indicate he was on a school trip with the football team when the mishap took place. Residents found his body on Thursday.
FWCF said the loss highlights the duty schools, coaches and other institutions carry when young people are left in their charge.
“While the circumstances surrounding this tragedy remain under investigation, the concerns raised by Kamal’s family warrant a thorough, transparent, and independent examination. FWCF calls on the relevant authorities to conduct a full investigation to determine the events leading to Kamal’s death, assess whether adequate supervision and safeguarding measures were in place, and identify any necessary reforms to strengthen child safety.”
Citing residents’ worries about how the emergency was handled, the foundation is also asking for existing marine rescue protocols to be reviewed — covering how quickly help arrives and whether trained divers and Coast Guard staff are on hand for water emergencies.
“We stand in solidarity with Kamal’s loved ones during this incredibly difficult time and urge that every effort be made to prevent similar tragedies in the future,” FWCF said.
