Firgo Diamond Targets Greed And Hardship In Conscious Reggae Single Big Shark

Kingston

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Emerging reggae and dancehall artiste Firgo Diamond is using his latest release, Big Shark, to speak on selfishness, disloyalty, poverty and the daily pressures ordinary people continue to carry.

The single was produced by veteran reggae producer Computer Paul, with Mark “Feedo” Baines serving as executive producer. Its message joins spiritual thought with social observation, as Firgo Diamond frames the record around honesty, endurance and being alert to the world around him.

“The song was inspired by the changes I always notice in people around me,” Firgo Diamond explained. “The moment some people get a better opportunity, they forget where they’re coming from.”

Although the record comes from his own experiences, Firgo Diamond said it also looks at inequality and the conditions still affecting several inner-city communities. “Even politicians sometimes have no regard for poor people. At times I feel like we still live on a plantation,” he said.

With sombre melodies and lyrics carrying deep emotion, Big Shark also has a faith-based mood. Firgo Diamond said the inspiration came through divine direction and the realities he has lived.

“It’s music people can meditate to. It can help youths stay connected to the Almighty despite the difficulties they face,” he shared.

The artiste said the song was not what he had planned to record when he entered the studio. “We went there to record another song, but suddenly ‘Big Shark’ came to me,” Firgo recalled. “Paul laid the track and created one of the sweetest bridges I’ve ever heard. He looked at me and said, ‘Firgo, this song will shine for a lifetime.’”

His manager, Margaret Pickersgill, also pushed him to complete the idea after listening to the early version of the song.

Firgo Diamond said much of his writing is influenced by difficult seasons in his life, including challenges and legal issues he faced while living in America. Those experiences, he said, still shape the way he sees life and the music he creates.

“I’ve been through a lot and my story still has to be told,” he said. “Sometimes people misunderstand conscious music, but I’ll always speak my truth.”

While he is still balancing his recording career with a regular job, Firgo Diamond said his commitment to music has not faded. “The music is what I crave for,” he declared.

Big Shark is getting spins on Full Force Radio and SunCity Radio, as Firgo Diamond works to carry his message to more listeners through personal storytelling and conscious reggae.

“I just want to leave some great music in this world, even a little fraction of what the great Bob Marley left behind,” Firgo Diamond said. “I want to leave inspiration for generations to come.”
