The Firearm Licensing Authority is set to discontinue its court action against an Integrity Commission report that accused the agency of database tampering, including the recording of a false ammunition purchase in the name of a deceased man.

FLA chairman retired judge Glenworth Brown said there was no need to continue the case because the issue had effectively ended after the report was tabled in Parliament on Tuesday.

Police sources said the man killed by police after an alleged taxi hijacking on Camp Road in Kingston on Wednesday was 34-year-old Shawn Ruby, a former probationary member of the Jamaica Constabulary Force. Ruby was reportedly removed from the JCF during probation over misconduct allegations.

The JCF also lost a serving member on Wednesday. Constable J Reed, 31, who was assigned to the Fugitive Apprehension Team, died after reportedly becoming ill at his home in Allman Town, Kingston.

The Jamaica Civil Service Association is warning that thousands of government workers may take further industrial action if the state does not urgently settle long-running concerns about travelling allowances and wage talks. Union president Techa Clark-Griffiths said public servants could not continue carrying costs that properly belong to the Government.

In sport, Sri Lanka opened the ODI series at Sabina Park with a 41-run win over West Indies on Wednesday. The visitors made 303 for seven before dismissing the Windies for 262, in a contest briefly interrupted by a power outage at the venue.

At midday, the Jamaican dollar traded with the US dollar selling for $158.91, the British pound for $216.64 and the Canadian dollar for $117.15. Friday’s forecast called for dry and hazy conditions.
