Flow Jamaica Launches 5G Network With Early Coverage Across Major Towns

1 min readSt. Catherine

Flow Jamaica has turned on its 5G mobile service, adding a new layer to Jamaica’s telecoms market and offering customers the prospect of faster and steadier mobile connections.

The company’s managing directors said users should see improved download performance, better quality for calls made over the internet, and a stronger connection experience as the network is introduced islandwide.

At the start, the service is being offered to Flow’s postpaid and business customers. The company says access will be widened in stages to other users as the buildout continues.

Flow says 5G coverage is already available in Kingston, Portmore, Spanish Town, May Pen and along the North Coast. Additional areas are expected to be added before the month ends, including Mandeville, Santa Cruz, Black River, Savanna-la-Mar, Bull Bay, Morant Bay and nearby communities.

The rollout comes with unresolved concerns. Last year, the Broadcasting Commission of Jamaica accused Flow and Digicel of breaching their subscription television licences, an issue that remains troubling for some customers as Jamaica moves into the hurricane season.

There is also no clear timeline for when rural and harder-to-reach parts of the country will be fully included in the 5G network.

Stephen Price, Flow Jamaica’s vice president and general manager, spoke at the launch and responded to questions about how the rollout is moving and what the company intends to do next.
