Flow starts 5G service in Jamaica with Kingston, Portmore and North Coast coverage
Flow has activated its 5G mobile service in Jamaica, promising stronger digital connectivity and quicker internet performance for customers as the telecommunications company begins the first stage of its rollout.
The announcement was made on Thursday at Flow’s St. Andrew headquarters by Stephen Price, the company’s vice-president and general manager. He said the upgraded mobile network should give users shorter download times, better internet-based voice service and a steadier connection.
Flow said post-paid residential customers and business clients will be the first groups placed on the new service. The company also noted that its network, which it said has been verified by Ookla as Jamaica’s fastest, has now moved into the 5G market.
“Today, blazing fast 5G coverage is now live across Kingston, Portmore, Spanish Town, May Pen, and the entire North Coast,” Price said.
The company said work is continuing to extend the 5G footprint into other main town centres. That expansion includes Black River in St. Elizabeth and Savanna-la-Mar in Westmoreland, with completion targeted for the end of June.
Telecommunications Minister Daryl Vaz welcomed the launch, describing it as important for Jamaica’s wider development. “This is more than a faster network. It is a foundation for a smarter economy and a more connected society,” he said.
Vaz also pointed to continuing concerns about service quality across the telecoms sector. The Office of Utilities Regulation is responsible for monitoring those standards, and the minister said customers will expect Flow to meet a basic level of reliability as the upgraded network comes on stream.
He added that when outages or other disruptions occur, telecoms providers should move more quickly to inform the public, including through social media and other communication channels.
