A man was shot and killed during an alleged confrontation with police in West Kingston on Sunday afternoon after officers reportedly pursued a stolen motor vehicle through sections of Kingston.
According to the police, around 3:00 p.m. a team responded to reports of a motor vehicle that had been stolen several weeks earlier. The vehicle was reportedly spotted along Spanish Town Road, where officers signalled the driver to stop.
Police say the driver ignored the order and sped away, leading officers on a chase that ended on Raymond Place in West Kingston.
Investigators allege that the occupants abandoned the vehicle and opened fire on the pursuing officers. The police say they returned fire during the reported exchange.
Following the incident, a man was found in a nearby gully suffering from gunshot wounds. He was taken to the Kingston Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
His identity has not yet been released.
The circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting are under investigation, and the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has been notified in keeping with protocol for police-involved fatal shootings.
