Grange unveils National Stadium redevelopment plans ahead of 2031 Women's World Cup
Jamaica's National Stadium is set for its most far-reaching overhaul in decades, as the Government moves forward with designs to modernise the country's main sporting venue.
During her sectoral debate presentation in Parliament, Sports Minister Olivia Grange unveiled updated plans she said would better position Jamaica to host major international sporting and entertainment events.
Under the redevelopment, seating capacity will rise to 37,500, with roof coverage and shade for every seat. Spectators will enjoy improved sightlines, with seats moved closer to the action and safety enhancements throughout the venue. For concerts, capacity will reach 50,000 when patrons fill both the stands and the field.
The upgraded facility will include 30 boxes and two VIP royal boxes, two hospitality lounges, a fan boulevard, and two fan zones. Plans also call for meeting accommodation, dedicated media suites with a television studio, broadcast facilities, and a venue operations centre. Additional features include a multi-purpose sports hall, a dedicated throws area, upgraded parking, and improvements to Stadium East.
Grange also announced that the stadium's new track has received World Athletics Class One certification. She told the House that all synthetic surface field test measurements meet World Athletics requirements, meaning performances on the distinctive black, gold, and green surface can now be officially recognised for record purposes.
Officials expect the redeveloped stadium to be ready in time for Jamaica's role as co-host of the 2031 FIFA Women's World Cup. Grange said the timing would allow the tournament to be staged in a retrofitted, world-class facility capable of accommodating top women's football players.
Separately, the minister said discussions are advancing on a US$550 million investment to redevelop Trilani Stadium into a world-class sports and entertainment venue, aimed at strengthening Jamaica's sports tourism sector.
