Harbour View Relegated as Cavalier Grab Play-off Berth in Dramatic JPL Finale

Five-time Jamaica Premier League champions Harbour View were relegated on Wednesday after a 2-1 defeat to reigning title holders Cavalier at Stadium East, where Cavalier held their composure and booked a play-off place in a high-pressure encounter.

Harbour View, who lifted the JPL trophy in 2022, will now return to parish-level football next season, ending a 31-year stretch in the country’s top flight.

Carvel Stewart, Harbour View chairman and founder of the club formed in 1974, said he intends to prevent the team from drifting into decline like former champions Santos and Boys’ Town. “We don’t plan to, but I will look deeply into it to make sure we prevent it. We have a very bright, vibrant youth situation, and they will be brought up. Some should have come up this year, but I don’t know why,” Stewart told the Jamaica Observer.

Harbour View moved in front in the 33rd minute when Trayvonne Reid produced a fine finish, and at that stage they were outside the relegation zone because fellow strugglers Molynes United were still tied 0-0 with Treasure Beach.

The mood then shifted sharply when word spread that Molynes had gone ahead. The Harbour View supporters inside Stadium East fell quiet, knowing that even a positive result of their own would not matter if Molynes United held on for victory.

Cavalier took control with two goals in two minutes, both from headers, to condemn Harbour View. Adrian Reid scored from a corner in the 76th minute, then Christopher Ainsworth added a glancing low header in the 78th.

As Harbour View were left devastated, Cavalier celebrated wildly after recovering from a difficult first half when their title defence and play-off hopes looked in danger. Assistant coach David Lalor said his half-time message was about staying calm and sticking to the task. “Just don’t panic because the reality was that we were doing well. It was one our mistakes that they capitalised on and earlier we could have gone ahead. So, I told them relax it will come and at the end of the day we got them,” said Lalor.

Cavalier ended the regular season fifth on 61 points, one ahead of Racing United on 60 after Racing beat Spanish Town Police FC 4-0.

Molynes United confirmed survival with a 2-0 win over Treasure Beach through goals from Marlon Pennicooke in the 46th minute and Odane Murray in the 62nd, moving to 42 points.

Arnett Gardens, who had been in prime position for a play-off place while Cavalier were trailing, beat Chapelton Maroons 7-2 but still finished seventh on 58 points and missed the post-season.

Mount Pleasant FA strengthened their hold on first place by beating Montego Bay United 2-1 to finish as regular-season champions on 74 points. Montego Bay closed in second on 71, and Portmore United took third on 66 after a 3-0 win over Tivoli Gardens FC, who finished 10th on 44.

Waterhouse FC defeated Dunbeholden 4-0 and secured fourth place on 65 points, while Dunbeholden ended ninth on 48.

In action at Stadium East, Cavalier’s Kimarly Scott contested possession with Harbour View’s Raul Parchment, while Harbour View’s Gavin Burton and Cavalier’s Daryl Massicot also battled for the ball.
