A woman died on Sunday afternoon in Granville, St. James, after police opened fire during a community protest linked to the fatal shooting of a 17-year-old boy by officers about a week earlier.

Police identified the victim as Latoya Bulgin, also known as Boojo. According to official accounts, she clashed with officers while residents were keeping watch over the demonstration and was shot during that encounter.

Footage from closed-circuit cameras has circulated in connection with the killing, which unfolded in a parish already strained by recent police use of force.

Marlene Malahoo Forte, Member of Parliament for St. James West Central, the constituency that includes the area, said what she saw at the scene left her convinced that the commissioner of police must move at once against the officer tied to the shooting.

"I'm not one to jump to hasty conclusion, and I do believe in process and investigation, but based on what I observed on the scene, the commissioner will have to take immediate action in relation to the officer in this matter," Malahoo Forte said.

She stopped short of prejudging the outcome of any probe. "Can't prejudge it, but it doesn't look good," she added.

The protest had been called to draw attention to the earlier death of the teenager in separate police-involved gunfire. Authorities have not, in the material available from the scene, released a full account of what led officers to fire at Bulgin or whether non-lethal options were tried first.

Residents in Granville have voiced anger over back-to-back lethal encounters involving the security forces within days. Malahoo Forte's call for swift disciplinary or administrative steps against the officer signals rising political pressure as investigators begin their work.

Further updates are expected as police complete their review of the incident and any associated video evidence.
