Munga Honourable, Co-Accused Freed in Murder Trial

1 min readKingston

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Dancehall entertainer Munga Honourable and his co-accused Sheridan Gordon were freed on Friday after prosecutors offered no further evidence in their murder trial.

Munga, whose real name is Damian Rhodes, and Gordon had been on trial in connection with the 2017 murder of Cleveland Smith in Ackee Walk, St Andrew.

The matter, which began last week in the Home Circuit Court, came to an abrupt end following issues surrounding the testimony of the prosecution’s sole eyewitness.

Sources indicated that numerous inconsistencies emerged during the witness’s evidence, weakening the case against the accused men. The witness concluded her testimony on Thursday, and by Friday the prosecution informed the court that it would offer no further evidence.

As a result, both men were formally freed of the charges.

The ruling sparked scenes of celebration among supporters and relatives gathered at court, bringing an end to a legal battle that had spanned several years.

Munga was represented by attorneys Christopher Townsend and Chadwyk Berry, while Gordon’s defence team consisted of King’s Counsel Peter Champagne and attorney-at-law Sayeed Bernard.

The entertainer had maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings.
