Education, Skills, Youth and Information Minister, Senator Dr. Dana Morris Dixon, has reaffirmed that no child should be prevented from attending school because they are unable to pay school fees.
Speaking during Wednesday’s post-Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House, Dr. Morris Dixon stressed that the Government’s policy guarantees every child access to an education, regardless of their family’s financial situation.
She acknowledged that while some schools charge fees, they do not have the authority to exclude students who cannot afford to pay.
The Minister said the Ministry of Education has provided schools with student welfare and other grants that can be used to assist families facing financial hardship.
She added that schools experiencing greater challenges can seek additional support from the Ministry.
Dr. Morris Dixon noted that some schools, particularly those with a high number of students benefiting from the Programme of Advancement Through Health and Education (PATH), have already received extra assistance for areas such as nutrition.
She encouraged principals facing financial difficulties to contact their regional education offices or the Ministry’s central office for further support.
According to the Minister, the Government remains committed to working with schools to ensure every child has access to education within the resources available.
