Kingston, Jamaica: One of the men critically injured in a devastating fire on South Camp Road has died from injuries sustained in the incident.
The deceased has been identified as Richard McQuire, who reportedly succumbed earlier today after suffering severe burns during the explosion at the Beryllium garage facility on Wednesday morning.
Reports indicate that two of the other injured men have since been airlifted to the United States for advanced medical treatment, while another victim remains hospitalized in intensive care at the Kingston Public Hospital.
The explosion occurred at a garage area adjacent to the company’s compound, where several workers were reportedly carrying out body repair work on one of the courier trucks between 8:30 a.m. and 9:15 a.m. Investigators say a fire broke out before a powerful explosion followed moments later.
At least five courier trucks were extensively damaged during the blaze, which required the response of multiple fire units to bring under control. Preliminary estimates place the damage at approximately $15 million.
Beryllium has stated that its main operations were not disrupted by the incident and emphasized that the fire did not spread to the company’s operational building or core business areas.
The Jamaica Fire Brigade is continuing investigations alongside company representatives to determine the cause of the explosion.
