INDECOM Opens St James Probe After Four Men Killed In Police Operation

St. James

The Independent Commission of Investigations, INDECOM, is examining the deaths of four men who were killed by police during a Wednesday morning security operation in Retirement, St James.

INDECOM told The Gleaner it had received notice of the matter and had started looking into how the men came to be fatally shot.

Early information suggests security force personnel were in the community trying to locate men suspected of being linked to a recent murder in the area. Police are said to have been fired on during the operation, after which there was a gun battle.

Four men died after being shot. Their names have not yet been made public.

The St James deaths came after seven men were killed in police-involved shootings across three parishes on Tuesday. That pushed the total to 11 people killed in such incidents within under 24 hours.

INDECOM said that, up to June 9, 143 people had died this year in shootings involving members of the security forces.

Investigators from the commission are expected to examine the location, take statements and review other material as part of the inquiry into Wednesday's incident. The police and INDECOM are both still carrying out investigations.
