Debut to remember - Clarke opens Reggae Boyz account in 2-0 win over India

Debut to remember - Clarke opens Reggae Boyz account in 2-0 win over India

Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz booked their place in the final of the Unity Cup after a comfortable 2-0 victory over India in their semi-final encounter at The Valley in South London yesterday.

Debutant Courtney Clarke, in the eighth minute, and Kaheim Dixon, in the 78th, scored the goals for the Reggae Boyz, who will now face Nigeria in Saturday’s final at the same venue.

The match will be a repeat of last year’s final, which Jamaica lost 5-4 on penalties after both teams battled to an entertaining 2-2 draw. Nigeria secured their place in the final on Tuesday after defeating Zimbabwe 2-0.

Clarke, a 23-year-old midfielder who plays for Walsall FC, opened the scoring when he curled home a powerful strike from the right side of the 18-yard box beyond India goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu.

Just a minute earlier, Dixon thought he had given Jamaica the lead, but his close-range effort was denied by Sandhu.

The Reggae Boyz, who assembled a youthful and inexperienced squad for the tournament, dominated the first half against an Indian team missing several key players. India failed to register a shot on target in the opening period, as Jamaica controlled possession and outmuscled their opponents across the field.

Despite their dominance, the Jamaicans entered the half-time break with only a one-goal advantage.

Dixon, who plies his trade with Charlton Athletic FC and was a constant threat down the right flank, sealed the victory in the 78th minute. The speedy attacker dribbled past three defenders before blasting a right-footed effort beyond Sandhu.

Interim head coach Rudolph Speid praised the performance of his young squad, while noting the importance of the early breakthrough.

“This is a very young team. A lot of these players have been playing for the first time together. The average age is under 21, so getting the first goal was very important,” said Speid.

“After that, we were more trying to consolidate and not trying to just bomb away to win the game, but also as part of our preparations for the next game.” Speid added that several of the Indian players exceeded expectations because they played well throughout the match.

“I think they (Indians) played really well and surprised us in some instances,” he said, pointing out that fatigue also played its part in the way the game played out.

“There were some players who, after such a long season, were probably feeling leg-weary, plus we wanted to see what other players could do,” he said.

“So yes, we made some substitutions for that reason, and, of course, I think it put some more life into our game after that.”

Speid pointed out that he is eagerly anticipating Saturday’s showdown against the Nigerians.

“You guys have beaten us every single time we met before, but I am hoping that is not the case this time,” he said.

“It is always exciting to play against Nigeria, they play exciting football. They are one of the powerhouses in Africa, so we always look forward to playing them.”

According to Speid, his technical staff has already started assessing the Nigerians ahead of the final.

“We saw them play last night. We will do some more analysis of what they will be doing and then we will decide if we need to change anything,” he said.

“They are very good, but every team is beatable. We have to be wary of what they bring, but we have some things to bring ourselves. We are still in a rebuilding stage, there are a lot of young players, but nobody is a winner before the game is played.”

Meanwhile, Clarke described his debut goal for Jamaica as a proud moment for both himself and his family.

“That means a lot for me, for my family, my friends from where I come from,” Clarke said.

“I have got to thank God for giving me a chance to showcase myself on the international stage and I am grateful.”
