Education Minister Senator Dr Dana Morris Dixon has outlined increased school funding, PEP achievements and plans for closer supervision of repair projects following the July 15, 2026 post-Cabinet press briefing. The measures affect institutions across Jamaica and include public disclosure of information about reconstruction contracts.

More than $832 million in additional funding has been provided to schools to help cover their operating costs. According to Morris Dixon, institutions received an average increase of 55 per cent in operational support, with particular attention also drawn to schools at the primary level.

The minister also highlighted the performance of the country’s leading Primary Exit Profile students. She said several schools secured places among the top 10 and that the achievements of the students should be recognised.

School principals who discussed the assessment rejected any suggestion that this year’s examination had been made easier. They said its standard remained consistent with previous years and required pupils to apply advanced reasoning and deep thought. One principal indicated that high schools should notice an improvement in the reasoning ability of these students when they enter grade seven.

Morris Dixon identified school reconstruction as another major concern. Hundreds of institutions have sustained damage, and several contracts have been issued to carry out the required repairs. However, she acknowledged that progress has not reached the level she wants.

The minister said she intends to travel across the country to inspect how the projects are proceeding. The Government also plans to publish details for each school, including the amount allocated, the contractor responsible and the expected completion schedule. She said making the information available would allow the authorities, contractors and public to maintain accountability while damaged schools are restored.
