Jamaica Child Month 2026 Focuses on Protecting and Uplifting the Nation’s Children

Jamaica is observing Child Month in May, a period meant to celebrate the country’s children while also strengthening efforts to protect and uplift them.
This year’s observance is unfolding against rising worry about children’s safety and welfare, with violence, neglect and mental health pressures continuing to affect young people across the island.
Kingston Mayor Andrew Swaby said many children are carrying pain quietly, warning that “too many children are fighting silent battles” and that unresolved trauma and emotional suffering can lead to severe outcomes.
At the KSAMC Children’s Month Candlelight Vigil held on Sunday at the Secret Garden in Downtown Kingston, State Minister for Local Government Delroy Williams said child protection must be treated as a collective duty.
Williams urged all stakeholders to move past symbolic observances and deliver concrete support for children in their homes and communities. His message positioned Child Month not only as a time of celebration, but also as a period for national accountability.
