Kingston Creative Opens Three Mural Calls For Artists In Kingston And Montego Bay

Kingston Creative has opened three mural opportunities at the same time, asking Jamaican artists to submit ideas for major public artworks in Kingston and Montego Bay. The initiatives are being carried out with the Norwegian Seafood Council, the Digicel Foundation and Doctors’ Cave Bathing Club, and will focus on food culture, environmental awareness and heritage. Submissions are now being accepted, with closing dates extending into June 2026.

The commissions represent a wider push by Kingston Creative to place art in public spaces. One project, called Saltfish & Soul, is being done with Norwegian Seafood and will be painted near Church Street and Water Lane in downtown Kingston, within the Water Lane Art District.

Another mural, Montego Bay – Past, Present & Future, is being developed with Doctors’ Cave Bathing Club. It will be the third mural in a set supporting cultural tourism work around Sam Sharpe Square.

The third project, Nature in Action, is planned for Constant Spring Road at the Abilities Foundation, a registered vocational training institution that has served persons with disabilities since 1992. Backed by the Digicel Foundation, that artwork will form the main visual feature for a green infrastructure project that includes rain gardens and bioswales.

Andrea Dempster Chung, Kingston Creative’s executive director, said public art allows stories to be shared in a direct and meaningful way with communities. She said the three calls highlight Jamaica’s culinary identity, recognise Montego Bay’s history, and use creative work to support environmental education. Dempster Chung also urged Jamaican artists to put forward proposals for spaces expected to benefit communities over the long term.

Kingston Creative said opening the three mural calls together shows its increasing work linking businesses, community organisations and the local creative sector. Artists are being asked to read the briefs and send in their submissions ahead of the stated deadlines. Details are available through [email protected] and kingstoncreative.org/opencall.

Kingston Creative is a non-profit organisation that uses art, culture and creativity to support social and economic change in Jamaica.
