Jermaine Miller, the new head coach at Kingston College (KC), says he welcomes the intensity that comes with steering one of Jamaica’s strongest schoolboy football programmes as he sets out to push the Fortis back to the forefront of the local game.
Miller guided KC’s under-16 side last season and has now stepped into the senior role vacated by long-serving coach Vassell Reynolds, who was not offered a fresh deal after the campaign ended.
Reynolds was in charge at the North Street school for three seasons and guided KC to the Manning Cup and Olivier Shield in 2024. The 2025 season proved tougher: the Fortis exited the Manning Cup in the second round, a showing widely seen as a factor in the decision to move on from Reynolds.
Expectations around the post remain steep, yet Miller insisted he is ready, in mind and body, for what lies ahead.
“The Kingston College job is a high-profile job and everyone knows that coming here as coach is always to produce results and to develop the players and to have them play good football,” said Miller. “Yes, it is a difficult task but I am preparing myself and my staff to come out and produce the best that we can.”
Miller arrives with a long coaching résumé. He took charge at St Catherine High School in 2015, assisted at St Jago High School in 2018, led Haile Selassie High School in 2019, and assisted at Jamaica College from 2020 to 2022. He then served as KC assistant from 2022 to 2024 before becoming head coach at Dinthill Technical in 2024.
Back on North Street, he described his current group as evenly built and able to challenge this season.
“It is a balanced squad, we have some returning players and we have some young players that are coming up, so it is a balanced squad that we will be looking to get the best out of this season,” he said. “It is a demanding job, there is a demanding management team but very supportive as well, and the fans are very demanding as well, and I am also demanding of myself and my staff and my players, so I know the expectations are high. We are looking forward to just going out there and making ourselves and our fans happy.”
Miller also confirmed that seven players from last term’s roster have departed, though he still trusts the talent remaining in camp.
“The confidence is high in the camp because all the players who come to Kingston College understand what it means to produce and to do well at all times,” Miller said. “They are always up to it, so it is always positive and, so far in the training, they have been showing positive signs and they are doing well, and so we are just excited and looking forward to the season.”
