JAAA mourns Stephen Francis as transformative force in Jamaican athletics

KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) says the country has lost one of its most influential figures in athletics with the death of coach Stephen Francis, a setback it warns will be deeply felt by his family, Jamaica's sporting community and the wider world of sport.

In a statement released Sunday, the governing body for track and field in Jamaica said Francis stood apart for the way he reshaped how athletes are developed on the island.

The association said: "Stephen Francis was a titan of track and field, whose visionary leadership and unparalleled coaching brilliance transformed the landscape of Jamaican track and field."

According to the JAAA, Francis helped change the face of local training as co-founder and head coach of MVP Track Club, showing that elite performers could be built at home and still compete at the highest international level.

The statement pointed to his record of producing Olympic and World Championship medallists, naming Brigitte Foster-Hylton, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Elaine Thompson-Herah, Melaine Walker and Asafa Powell, along with many others.

It said: "His stellar career is defined by an extraordinary roster of Olympic and World Championship medallists, including icons like Brigitte Foster-Hylton, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Elaine Thompson-Herah, Melaine Walker and Asafa Powell, among countless others. His meticulous approach to technique, unwavering discipline and uncanny ability to spot and develop raw talent earned him a rightful place among the greatest coaches in sports history."

The JAAA also spoke of Francis as more than a medal-winning coach, describing him as a mentor, father figure and strong supporter of the athletes under his care.

It added: "He instilled a culture of resilience and excellence that inspired generations of young Jamaicans to dream without limits. His immense contributions to our national sporting heritage will forever be etched in the annals of history. During this incredibly difficult time, our thoughts and prayers are with his family, his athletes at MVP and all those whose lives he touched. May his incredible legacy continue to inspire, and may his soul rest in eternal peace."
