Jamaica has received the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier in Kingston, with the Government describing the visit as a strong sign of the enduring relationship between Jamaica and the United States. The vessel arrived at the Port of Kingston on Monday, June 1, marking the last leg of the Southern Seas 2026 Goodwill Tour and pointing to continued cooperation on maritime safety, regional peace and people-to-people engagement.
At the arrival ceremony and media tour at the Kingston Freeport Terminal, Minister of Industry, Investment, and Commerce, Senator the Hon. Aubyn Hill, greeted the crew and spoke about Jamaica's well-known spirit of welcome. The carrier is scheduled to remain in Jamaica for five days as it closes out the goodwill mission.
Minister Hill said he had seen the USS Nimitz operating during his time in the Middle East, and he reflected on both the carrier's capabilities and the importance of having it in Jamaican waters. "We're pleased to have you here," he said, adding that Jamaica places high value on its ties with the United States, the country's biggest trading partner.
He also thanked the US for providing humanitarian support to Jamaica after Hurricane Melissa affected the island in October 2025.
Scott Renner, Chargé d'Affaires at the US Embassy in Kingston, said the ship's stop in Jamaica was a powerful example of the partnership between the two countries. "There's not a better symbol of the security cooperation between the US and Jamaica and our work on maritime security than this incredible ship being here today. You know, it really is part of an overall relationship we have with Jamaica," Mr. Renner said.
He added that about 19 Jamaican and Jamaican-American sailors are serving alongside US colleagues in the carrier's wider operations.
From June 1 to 5, members of the USS Nimitz crew are expected to take part in community activities with the Jamaica Defence Force. The planned engagements include painting and fixing schools, staging American football camps for youth groups, and arranging ship tours for students from the Caribbean Maritime University and other institutions.
More than 4,000 sailors are aboard the USS Nimitz, and while the carrier is in port they will get a chance to experience Jamaican food, hospitality and music.
Rear Admiral Cassidy Norman, Commander of Carrier Strike Group 11 on the USS Nimitz, thanked Jamaica for the warm reception and called the country a "trusted partner and a leader in the Caribbean."
"Our Southern Seas 2026 mission is centered on one simple idea - security enables prosperity," said Rear Admiral Norman. "We view our security, our stability, and our prosperity as being intricately tied to yours. Jamaica plays an important role in regional stability through maritime security, professional maritime education, and leadership across the Caribbean," he added.
