Lady Songbird builds on Talkin’ Bout Love buzz ahead of Tuff Gong sessions

2 min readKingston

Boston-born reggae vocalist Lady Songbird is off to a promising start in the studio game, with her first release, Talkin’ Bout Love, picking up steady radio spins and warm responses from the reggae community.

“The DJs love this song,” Lady Songbird said. “The outpouring of love, messages and fire emojis has been incredible. It’s inspiring me as I continue working on my EP.”

Putting out that first official track realises an ambition she has carried for years.

“It feels amazing,” she said. “I’ve been a reggae music enthusiast for years, traveling to festivals and carnivals around the world. Releasing this song has brought my love for reggae full circle.”

Drawn from lived experience, Talkin’ Bout Love explores how relationships can be both tender and complicated.

“I wanted to capture the beautiful parts of loving someone,” she explained. “The song isn’t based on just one relationship. I want listeners to understand that love, in its purest form, is something to be cherished.”

A standout part of the session was working with noted player and producer Aston Barrett Jr, who handled almost all of the instrumentation. She credited his creative approach and careful craft across the production.

“He taught me the importance of maintaining the integrity of the reggae sound,” Lady Songbird said.

Though raised in Boston, she says the music has long been at the heart of her world. She points to selector Junior Rodigan and Volcano Sound as early guides who deepened her love of Jamaican sounds.

She is eager to travel to Jamaica next, reconnect with figures in the island’s music scene, and cut the follow-up single from her upcoming EP, Empress Lady, at the famed Tuff Gong Studios later this summer.

In the year ahead she aims to finish the six-song Empress Lady EP, lay down a full album, and take stages at reggae festivals throughout Europe. With Talkin’ Bout Love landing well and fresh material already in motion, Lady Songbird is emerging as a new artist determined to keep reggae’s authentic character intact.
