Jamaica U-20 and Dancehall Acts Headline Lauderhill Pre-World Cup Events
South Florida's Caribbean audience is being targeted for two football showcases ahead of the World Cup in the United States.
The pre-World Cup kickoff events are set for June 6 and 7, with Wayne Wonder, Spragga Benz, Jahshii and Laa Lee booked to perform after each programme.
Richard Campbell, the Jamaican-born vice mayor of Lauderhill, said on Monday that the fixtures are intended to build excitement among Caribbean residents, business operators and football supporters. He noted that Miami will stage seven World Cup matches, adding that Lauderhill has spent the past year preparing community activities tied to the tournament.
Campbell said organisers want the occasion to motivate young footballers and give the community a meaningful connection to the World Cup. Local teams have also been invited to take part in the events.
According to Campbell, Jamaica's Under-20 team has been asked to participate. The squad is scheduled to face Haiti Under-20 on June 6 in the feature match at Lauderhill's sports complex.
On Sunday, June 7, Jamaica U-20 are down to meet Miami United FC in the main game at the Broward County sports complex, widely known as the Cricket stadium.
Campbell also said the activities will include a youth clinic for more than 600 children, with organisers aiming to create as much World Cup-related exposure as possible for youngsters, residents, spectators and business interests.
