JCF Deputy Commissioner Reaffirms Sub-500 Murder Target for 2026

The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) has restated its commitment to keeping the national homicide count under 500 for 2026.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Warren Clarke, who heads the force's Strategic Operations Portfolio, shared that message on Friday, June 12, while addressing divisional commanders from Area 4 at Harman Barracks in Kingston. He said units across the area performed strongly during the first quarter, though recent results have been less steady.

Clarke pointed to the area's newly launched 60-day Iron Shield initiative as a tool to increase police presence on the ground and go after persons linked to violent offending. He told the gathering that the force must pull current figures back in line with its sub-500 goal.

"We are going to be walking back the numbers to put us on the right trajectory for this sub-500. We owe it to the citizens of Jamaica," DCP Clarke affirmed.

Constabulary data show that 251 murders were recorded across Jamaica from January 1 to June 13, 2026. Officials are seeking to bring the country's murder rate down to 15 per 100,000 residents, a level below the regional average of roughly 16 to 17 homicides per 100,000 people.

"In 2025 we ended at 23 murders per capita…and that is one of the reasons why we are very anxious to get this below the regional average," DCP Clarke said.

The Strategic Operations head also noted earlier progress, stating that killings had fallen from a peak of 63 per 100,000 in recent years. He expressed faith in JCF members to keep driving the numbers down.

"We are very, very confident that you have the know-how, you have the courage, and you have the leadership acumen to deliver to the citizens of the country [and] the Government, sub-500 murders for 2026," he affirmed.
