Monifa builds momentum with Try Me, Chronic Law remix and UK management
Jamaican singer Monifa says her career has entered a more purposeful stage after years of recording music that she felt was not being properly released or promoted. In a TVJ Entertainment Report feature, she said support from British producer-manager Black London has helped put the business around her music on firmer footing.
Monifa described her sound as Caribbean pop, while admitting she once struggled with holding back vocally because she knew she could sing. She said she is learning when to showcase her voice fully and when to ease into a lighter delivery.
The singer said the shift came after Black London became more directly involved in her career. She said he had previously signed her to Empire around 2020 or 2021, with Empire serving as her distribution company, but that his hands-on role is more recent. She also identified Pickpockets Music as part of the structure now supporting her.
Her single Try Me has become a breakthrough moment for her online. Monifa said the song has been gaining traction on TikTok, Instagram and other social media platforms, reaching 227,000 streams, which she called a personal first.
She linked the song to the hurt she felt after her mother died and after a relationship with a footballer ended painfully. Monifa said the experience pushed her to write honestly, adding that music became her therapy. She said Try Me gives voice to women who have been hurt but cannot act on the anger they feel.
The remix features dancehall artiste Chronic Law, a collaboration Monifa credited to Black London. She said Chronic Law heard the track and added the energy she wanted, describing him as an artiste she admires.
Another release, Chaotic, explores a softer and more distressed side of the same period. Monifa said it came from a time when she was replaying painful events and feeling emotionally overwhelmed.
Despite the public attention around her breakup and her current relationship, Monifa said she is more settled now. She said her late mother remains a major source of motivation, and that she still wants to become a major pop star.
