Oblique Seville clocks 10.09 to win opening men's 100m heat at JAAA national championships
Reigning world 100m champion Oblique Seville opened his senior campaign at the JAAA National Junior and Senior Athletics Championships with a controlled victory in the first men's 100m heat on day one at the National Stadium in Kingston.
The opening evening session followed morning first-round qualifying for non-automatic qualifiers, with senior men now moving through the heats toward semi-finals and the final. Seville was introduced to spectators before taking lane five in a field that also included Rasheed Foster in lane four, Odean McPherson in lane three, Michael Campbell in lane two, and Zhane Barrett in lane one. Raheem Pinnock ran from lane six, Jason Lewis of Swept Track Club from lane seven, and Stephen Clunis of the University of Missouri from lane eight.
Foster, a back-to-back collegiate champion in Jamaica running for Elite Performance, was among those pressing early alongside McPherson, who usually gets out quickly. Seville stayed in contention from the gun, took charge midway through the race, and pulled clear from about 80 metres to finish well ahead of the pack.
Seville crossed the line in 10.11 seconds on the flash time before the result was ratified at 10.09. Foster was second in 10.30, followed by Campbell in 10.39, Lewis in 10.43, and Clunis in 10.57. McPherson placed sixth in 10.60 after a sluggish start that left him well down the field, with Barrett seventh in 10.64.
The performance reinforced Seville's status as the headline name in Jamaica's senior sprint lineup on a day that also featured earlier under-18 and under-20 boys' 100m action. Four semi-final heats were scheduled to follow as the championship programme continued through the evening session.
