Phenomenal Power Breaks 43-Year Caymanas Record in Clovis Metcalfe Trophy Win

1 min readSt. Catherine

Phenomenal Power rewrote the record books at Caymanas Park on Saturday, stopping the clock in 1:29.0 over seven and a half furlongs (1,500 metres) to claim the $1.25-million Clovis Metcalfe Trophy. The time bettered Sky Train's longstanding mark of 1:29.2, which had stood since May 7, 1983.

The Adrian Prince-trained three-year-old American-bred dark bay colt jumped cleanly from the start with Raddesh Roman aboard and held command throughout. Phenomenal Power set the fractions along the backstretch, found another gear rounding the turn and drew clear in the final furlong, crossing the wire 11¼ lengths to the good.

Diesel Train, with Tajay Suckoo in the irons, finished second, while Royal Poppy and Dane Dawkins completed the minor placings in third.

Racing resumes on Sunday with the 100th running of the $4.5-million Jamaica St Leger Classic, the second leg of the Triple Crown series. Dream Catcher and Salute The Don arrive seeking further honours after taking the 1000 Guineas and 2000 Guineas, respectively.
