PNP urges renewable energy shift for NWC water plants after national outage

Opposition Spokesperson on Water Ian Hayles is pressing the Government to quickly adopt a policy that would place key National Water Commission facilities on solar power and other advanced renewable energy systems. Hayles said the weekend island-wide electricity failure exposed a serious weakness in Jamaica’s water supply network. He argued that NWC treatment plants rely too heavily on the Jamaica Public Service grid, causing thousands of people across the country to lose water access. Hayles is seeking prompt explanations from the Government and wants a firm policy change, saying inaction amounts to a governance failure that endangers public health, tourism and everyday life in densely settled communities nationwide.
