Police name drowned CMU student as probes continue into five Jamaica deaths

Police on Wednesday identified a university student whose body washed ashore in Treasure Beach on Tuesday, a day after he reportedly went missing while swimming. He is Jaleel Simpson, a Caribbean Maritime University student. Simpson, who was visiting relatives in Treasure Beach, went to swimming on Monday and he got into difficulty when he was overcome by strong undertow. Efforts by residents to save him were unsuccessful. On Tuesday, his body washed ashore at Old Wharf in Treasure Beach. 17-year-old suspected of homicide in northern Clarendon. Police are probing a suspected case of homicide involving a 17-year-old a college student in Carty Hill near James Hill in northern Clarendon on Tuesday. Police identified him as Brintey Shaw, a resident of Carty Hill and a student of Knox Community College. A report said about 8:25 p.m., police were alerted to Shaw's family home after a relative found him in inside a chicken coop. The Frankfield police are investigating the incident. Huddled on the veranda of their family home, relatives of 10-year-old Shenai Keisha Cook, whose partially nude body was found with her throat slashed on Tuesday, remembered the child for her brilliance and the radiant smile. Shenai was born here and lived with her grandparents because her mother has to work. When Shenai goes to school, she doesn't play around. She took her education seriously. From Shenai at the Go Basic School, she was always first in class. She was always putting out her best. She's from an educated background. Her father is educated and so is her mother. The child's aunt, Shana Williams-Stephens, told the journalist on Wednesday as she stood beside her grieving sister, Shenai's mother, Akim Akim Williams. The aunt's hands that could not hold the many academic trophies and the certificates earned by Shenai during her tenure at the Troy Primary School. From grade one, her teachers rewarded her. Whether it was a stamp in her book or sweets, or you know, the teachers always try to elevate her for her to know that she does good. Her mother would always buy her gifts to encourage her, said the Williams-Stephens. Right now, she was among the top students at Troy Primary. If school was keeping, it would have to lock today because of Shenai, added the aunt while pointing out that up to last Friday, Shenai was recognized for her participation in summer school. And last week, she got her certificate to show her brilliance. When you look at her, you see the next doctor, lawyer, and they just took her life. Just cut her off. Right now, we are devastated. Right now, we don't know our head from our feet. Last night, we no sleep. This is traumatizing. Maybe Keisha was going to come and take her mother out of poverty and they cut her life short and kill her, Williams-Stephens said before breaking down in tears, according to a police report as well as the account of residents. Mid-afternoon Tuesday, Chinai was walking home from a shop along a roadway near her home when she was abducted. Later, a farmer who had gone in search of his cow after hearing strange sounds from bushes made the grizzly discovery and raised an alarm. Police said following the discovery of the child's body there was a mob attack on the father and the son in the community. Residents told the news that the two men are Chinai's relatives. Angry residents accused the son of raping and the killing the child. He was beaten, chopped, and the stoned to death while his father, who was also attacked by the mob, was admitted to hospital. Police identified the dead man as Delroy Coke but did not provide any other information. Chinai's father asked Ron Coke, otherwise called the Junior, told journalists that his daughter was well-loved and admired by many in her community. Her grandmother sent her to the shop and that she did not make it back home. Someone stopped her on the street and they disturbed her somehow and they slashed her throat. She was loving and the caring in the community growing up. Everybody knows her. She knows everyone. She can see you and they call you by your full name. She had a sense of humor. She was also doing well in school and that she got a lot of academic awards, said the heartbroken father. She decided that she wanted to make something out of herself growing up because we were driving that into her head, but the things just happened overnight, added Coke as he alleged that the man believed to have killed his daughter was a habitual offender. It is an act that it should never have happened in this neighborhood, declared a Coke who is a battling his own health problems. He recounted the last encounter with his daughter over the weekend. She came by Saturday afternoon and the man uncle was putting on a back to school treat up by the community center and the she went there to get bags and the food. She was very polite. She stopped by and I said to Keisha, what are you doing here? Aren't you supposed to be up by the treat? She said, yes daddy and she walked off and I said, daddy, later when I'm coming back, I will stop and show you what I get. I called her back and went into my wallet to get her money to buy juice. Coke said, that was the first time my uncle and the some of my aunt met her. I didn't get to see her Sunday morning when she went to church and I didn't get to see her yesterday because she didn't come all the way out here to the store. He said as he reflected on the precious memories and the proud moments he spent with his daughter. She was always smiling and you never saw her sad. You always saw her happy. Those are the things I remember about her at all times. When it comes to the academics, you go by her grandmother's house. Trust me, you will see a lot of achievement trophies that she got at school. Even sometime when her mother and the grandmother are not around, I go by the church to collect them. He said, it is a very sad story to know that this neighborhood of Troy Tulani has come to this. I don't know if it is because it reached to my doorstep where it feels so pressuring, but the things have been happening around here a long time and then nobody gets the justice, charged the Coke. Woman killed man to poison in Moberly. A man is said to be in hospital after ingesting what appeared to be poisonous while his wife is dead from chop wounds. Reports are that the St. James the police are now investigating a case of suspected murder and attempted suicide in the Greater community of Norwood. The name of the deceased woman has not yet been disclosed. The condition of the man has not yet been ascertained. It is alleged that there was an altercation between the couple about 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday which resulted in the woman sustaining several chop wounds which approved a fatal. According to unconfirmed reports, the couple have been going through divorce proceedings and it seems that things took a turn for the worse. Detainee falls ill, dies in police custody. The Independent Commission of Investigations has launched an investigation into the death of a man who became ill while in police custody at the Doheny Park Police Station in St. Andrew. The deceased has been identified as Horace Williams of East Albion in St. Thomas. Williams was arrested on July 2 in connection with a murder investigation and had been detained at the Corporate Area Police Station pending further court proceedings. The news understands that Williams became ill on the afternoon of July 21. He was taken to the Kingston Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The circumstances surrounding his illness and the death have not yet been disclosed. INDECOM, which is mandated to investigate deaths involving persons in the custody of the security forces, has commenced a probe into the incident. The death comes against the backdrop of a number of persons dying while in state custody this year. Up to yesterday, there had have 15 reported deaths in custody across a correctional facilities and the police stations. A post mortem examination is expected to be conducted to determine the cause of Williams's death while in the comms investigation continues.
