Police say a man died from gunfire after an alleged clash with officers in West Kingston on Sunday afternoon, following a chase linked to a motor vehicle reported stolen weeks earlier.
According to the police, a team moved on a sighting of the vehicle at about 3 p.m. The car was spotted on Spanish Town Road, and officers say they ordered the driver to halt. The driver is alleged to have fled instead, and a pursuit followed through parts of Kingston.
The chase, police said, finished on Raymond Place in West Kingston. Occupants then left the vehicle, according to the account. Officers claim the men fired on them and that police shot back.
After the shooting, police reported finding a man with bullet wounds in a gully nearby. He was taken to the Kingston Public Hospital and pronounced dead there. Authorities have not named him.
The matter remains under investigation, and the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has been advised.
