KINGSTON, Jamaica — Ralford Mullings added another NCAA men’s discus title to his record on Friday, landing 65.81m on the third day of the Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. The University of Oklahoma athlete, who is Jamaica’s national record holder and national champion, came through in a strong contest to defend his crown.

Jamaicans filled the top two places, with University of Southern California thrower Racquil Broderick taking second after a personal-best 64.15m. Christopher Young of the University of Alabama also produced a lifetime best, reaching 62.30m for fifth, while Florida State’s Shamar Reid was sixth with the same distance.

Mullings was in front from the opening round before Air Force’s Texas Tanner moved ahead. The Jamaican responded in the fourth round with the mark that settled the event. Alabama’s Trevor Gunzel, another Jamaican in the field, finished 14th with 58.90m, while LSU’s Chad Hendricks recorded 55.40m.

In the 800m, Arkansas pair Tyrice Taylor and Rivaldo Marshall were beaten by Northern Arizona’s Colin Sahlman, who won in 1:44.22. Taylor placed second in 1:44.30, with Marshall third in 1:44.93. Baylor’s Demario Prince ended sixth in the 110m hurdles in 13.25 seconds.
